Is it safe to buy a lobster and then free it?

So I have a vegan friend, and as a birthday surprise, I want to buy this lobster that's been at the market for months (which my friends thinks is realllly sad), and free it into the ocean. Is this plausible? The supermarket tank is still cold, salt water.

Also, I live in the lobster capital of Canada, so chances are it was most definately caught locally.

If you want to be positive the lobster was caught in the ocean. ask the people who work at the market (if that's possible and they know), If he was, then a short while in captivity shouldn't hinder his ability to be ok in the wild.

Anyway, I think that is a very sweet idea. HOWEVER - I don't want to completely deter you - but I don't know if you thought about this. You wouldn't actually be saving a lobster. I mean, yes, THAT lobster would be saved, but the money you give to market sellers will then be used to pay for a fisherman to capture a new lobster. In that way, you are actually supporting the industry. I know some people on here are implying we should all save a lobster (and I've wanted to but haven't because of the reason I said). If all vegetarians DID hypothetically rush out and adopt a lobster, the lobster business would suddenly be booming and more people would have to be hired and more lobsters caught, and well... an endless loop. The only way they will stop selling lobsters is if no one buys them.

All that isn't to say you shouldn't do this idea. I find the idea endearing. If your friend has a special connection to lobsters or to a certain lobster, who I am to say you aren't here to as a blessing to this particular lobster? Maybe he needs a second chance and maybe you all need to help with that.
